Green-Eyed Monster

My friends and family have been so supportive of me and my quest to take off the baby weight. Especially when I talk about other moms I know who seem to have dropped the weight like the proverbial hot potato. "Those are the exceptions to the rule," they say. "You look great for having had a baby seven months ago."

It's sweet, really, and I'm not saying I don't appreciate it. But: (1) I don't want to look great for having had a baby. I want to look great. Period. and (2) I'm not sure those moms ARE the exception to the rule, because off the top of my head, I can think of more skinny moms I know than of moms like me.

Case in point: the Cricket and I went to a friend's house this weekend to meet her 2-month-old baby. I had given her my old maternity clothes to wear while she was pregnant, and when we got there, she had them all boxed up for me and ready to go, because, she proudly announced while lifting her shirt to show me an impossibly flat stomach, "I don't need them anymore. I'm wearing my normal jeans again!"

Okay, seriously. I was wearing maternity clothes until the Cricket was 3 months old, and I only stopped because I went back to work. And THEN I had to buy about $250 worth of new (larger) clothes just to have something to wear to work. I'm only just now getting into my normal, pre-preggo clothes.

So why, Universe, do some women get to shed the baby pounds like yesterday's clothing while I'm over here counting every calorie and working my ass off? And why do I know so damn many of these aforementioned women?

Okay, I can understand the frustration you have with others and how they look - what they've done - where they're at right now. I have seen you during the preggo days and saw you again today. You look so good, you look comfortable with yourself and you carry yourself very well. I hope you are proud of the changes you have made to this point.

You look maaaaavelous! Sal.
